Chest X-rays

What is a chest x-rays?

A chest X-ray is a common, non-invasive imaging test that uses a small amount of radiation to produce a picture of the structures inside your chest. It allows healthcare providers to examine the lungs, the size and shape of the heart, the large blood vessels, and the surrounding ribs and spine. This test is often the first step in diagnosing symptoms like a persistent cough, shortness of breath, or chest pain.

Key Details for Patients: Chest X-ray

  • Procedure Time: Typically takes about 5–10 minutes to complete.
  • Common Views: You will usually be asked to stand against a flat surface. The two standard views are Posteroanterior (PA), where the beam enters from the back, and Lateral, where you turn sideways to provide a profile view of the heart and lungs.
  • Preparation: No special preparation is needed. You will be asked to remove any jewelry, piercings, or clothing with metal (like bras with underwires) and will likely be given a hospital gown to wear.
  • Breath Control: To ensure the lungs are fully expanded and the image is clear, the technologist will ask you to take a deep breath and hold it for a few seconds during the exposure.
  • Safety: The amount of radiation used is very low—roughly equivalent to the amount of natural background radiation you would normally be exposed to over a few days.
