Ribs X-rays

What are ribs x-rays?

A rib X-ray is a specialized diagnostic imaging test designed to take detailed pictures of the bony cage that protects your chest and upper abdomen. While a standard chest X-ray focuses on the heart and lungs, a rib X-ray uses different angles and exposure settings to highlight the 12 pairs of ribs. This allows healthcare providers to identify structural damage or abnormalities that might be hidden on a general chest scan.

Key Details for Patients

  • Procedure Time: Typically takes about 10–15 minutes.
  • Common Views: You will be asked to stand or lie down in several positions. Because ribs are curved, the technologist will take "oblique" views (turning you at an angle) to see the sides and back of the rib cage clearly.
  • Preparation: No special prep is required, but you must remove all jewelry and clothing with metal (such as bras with underwire or shirts with snaps) from the waist up.
  • Breath Control: You will be asked to take a deep breath and hold it, or sometimes to blow all your air out and hold it, depending on which ribs are being photographed.
  • Post-Exam: You can return to your daily routine immediately. If you are in pain from an injury, your provider will discuss management steps once the images are reviewed.
