pelvis X-rays

What is a pelvis x-ray?

A pelvis X-ray is a diagnostic imaging test used to capture a detailed picture of the large, butterfly-shaped bone structure at the base of the spine that connects the legs to the upper body. This scan allows healthcare providers to examine the pelvic girdle, including the hip joints, the sacrum, and the coccyx (tailbone). It is a fundamental tool for identifying bone alignment issues, joint wear, or structural damage in the lower torso.

Key Details for Patients

  • Procedure Time: Typically takes about 10–15 minutes.
  • Common Views: You will usually be asked to lie flat on your back on an X-ray table. The technologist may ask you to turn your toes inward (pigeon-toed) to get a better view of the hip necks.
  • Preparation: No special prep is needed, but you must remove all metal from the waist area, including belts, zippers, coins, and piercings. You will likely be asked to change into a hospital gown.
  • Breath Control: You will be asked to lie very still and may need to hold your breath for a few seconds to prevent the image from blurring.
  • Safety: If there is any possibility of pregnancy, it is vital to inform the technologist beforehand, as the pelvic area is close to the reproductive organs.
