wrist X-rays

What is a wrist x-ray?

A wrist X-ray is a diagnostic imaging test used to capture detailed pictures of the joint where the forearm meets the hand. This procedure uses a small, safe amount of radiation to visualize the eight small carpal bones of the wrist, as well as the ends of the radius and ulna (forearm bones). It is the primary tool for evaluating the cause of sudden pain, swelling, or limited movement in the wrist area.

Key Details for Patients

  • Procedure Time: Typically takes about 5–10 minutes.
  • Common Views: You will sit at the end of an X-ray table with your arm extended. The technologist will take images from the top (PA), the side (Lateral), and at an angle (Oblique) to see between the small bones.
  • Preparation: No special prep is required, but you must remove all jewelry, including watches, bracelets, and rings, as metal will block the view of the bones.
  • Positioning: You may be asked to move your hand into a "cup" shape or tilt it to the side for a few seconds. If the wrist is very painful, the technologist will move your arm as gently as possible.
  • Post-Exam: There is no recovery time. You can resume your normal daily activities immediately after the test.
