Lumbar spine X-rays

What is a lumbar spine x-rays?

A lumbar spine X-ray is an imaging test used to evaluate the five large vertebrae (L1 through L5) that make up the lower back. This area supports the majority of the body's weight and is a frequent source of discomfort. Key Details for Patients: Lumbar Spine X-ray

  • Procedure Time: Typically takes about 10–15 minutes, depending on the number of views requested by your doctor.
  • Common Views: You will likely be asked to lie on a table or stand in different positions, such as Anteroposterior (AP) (front-to-back) and Lateral (side-view), to capture the full curve of your lower back.
  • Preparation: No fasting or special prep is required. However, you should wear comfortable clothing and will be asked to remove any metal objects—like belts, zippers, or jewelry—that could block the view of your spine.
  • Breath Control: To ensure the clearest image possible, the technologist may ask you to take a deep breath and hold it for a few seconds while the X-ray is being taken.
  • Post-Exam: There is no recovery time; you can resume all normal activities, including driving and working, immediately after the procedure.
