Special request X-rays

Special Request x rays

Sometimes a standard X-ray isn't enough to see exactly what is happening inside a joint or moving body part. In these cases, a physician might order a Special Request X-ray. these procedures often involve specific "stress" positions or the use of a contrast agent to provide a dynamic or more detailed look at the area of concern.

Common Types of Special Request X-rays

  • Stress X-rays: These are used to test the stability of a joint (commonly the ankle or knee). A technologist or physician will apply a controlled amount of pressure to the joint while the image is taken to see if the ligaments are holding the bones in place or if there is "opening" in the joint space.
  • Weight-Bearing X-rays: While many X-rays are taken lying down, a "weight-bearing" request requires the patient to stand. This shows how the spine, hips, knees, or feet align under the actual pressure of the body's weight, which is crucial for diagnosing flat feet or narrowing joint spaces.
  • Flexion and Extension Views: Frequently requested for the cervical or lumbar spine. You will be asked to bend your neck or back as far forward as possible, and then as far backward as possible. This helps doctors see if any vertebrae are "slipping" (spondylolisthesis) during movement.
  • Arthrograms: This involves injecting a contrast dye directly into a joint (like the shoulder or hip) before the X-ray. The dye outlines the internal structures, making it easier to see small tears in the cartilage or the joint capsule.
  • Scoliosis Series (Full Spine): A specialized long-format X-ray that captures the entire spine from the base of the skull to the pelvis on a single image. This is used to measure the exact degree of spinal curvature.
