hip X-rays

What is a hip x-ray?

A hip X-ray is a diagnostic imaging test used to capture detailed images of the "ball-and-socket" joint where the femur (thigh bone) meets the pelvis. This procedure uses a small, safe amount of radiation to visualize the bone structure, the alignment of the joint, and the space where protective cartilage resides. It is the primary tool for evaluating the cause of pain in the groin, thigh, or buttock areas.

Key Details for Patients

  • Procedure Time: Typically takes about 10–15 minutes.
  • Common Views: You will usually lie flat on an X-ray table. The technologist may take an Anteroposterior (AP) view of both hips together, followed by a "Frog-leg" lateral view, where you bend your knee and rotate your hip outward to see the side of the joint.
  • Preparation: No special prep is required. You will be asked to remove all metal from the waist area, including belts, zippers, buttons, and coins, and will likely change into a hospital gown.
  • Safety: If there is any possibility of pregnancy, inform the technologist immediately, as the hip joint is located very close to the reproductive organs.
  • Post-Exam: You can resume your normal activities immediately. Your results will be sent to your healthcare provider to determine the next steps in your care
