hand X-rays

What is a hand x-rays?

A hand X-ray is a diagnostic imaging test used to capture detailed images of the bones and soft tissues in your hand, including the wrist, palm, and all five fingers. This procedure uses a very low dose of radiation to help healthcare providers examine the 27 small bones that make up the hand's complex structure. It is the primary tool for evaluating pain, stiffness, or visible deformities in the fingers or joints.

Key Details for Patients

  • Procedure Time: Typically takes about 5–10 minutes.
  • Common Views: You will place your hand flat on a digital plate. The technologist will usually take three views: PA(palm flat), Oblique (hand tilted at an angle), and Lateral (hand on its side) to see the bones from every direction.
  • Preparation: No special preparation is needed, but you must remove all rings, watches, and bracelets, as metal will block the view of the underlying bone.
  • Stay Still: Because the bones in the hand are so small, it is crucial to keep your fingers perfectly still during the "click" of the camera to avoid a blurry image.
  • Post-Exam: You can return to your normal activities immediately. Your doctor will review the images to determine if further treatment, like a splint or cast, is necessary.
